Some of the best surfing in South America is found at Salsa Brava.

The center stage of Puerto Viejo surfing features notoriously wild and challenging Salsa Brava.  Its boxy barrel hammers thunderously on a sharp shallow reef.  There are multiple fickle beach breaks within 15 kilometers of Salsa Brava.  Playa Negra is more of a beginner’s spot and going north you can find waves at Playa Cocles, Chiquita, and Grande.

Salsa Brava is a heavy reef break that offers Hawaiian style juice and barrels. The surfing at Salsa Brava is not for beginners, but there are some good beginner spots in the area.

The surf is generally biggest between December and March, but can be good almost any month with the flattest months being September and October.

Puerto Viejo By Car:  

 To get from San Jose to Puerto Viejo you should take the Limon highway through the cloud forest of Braulio Carrillo National Park, passing Guápiles and Siquirres on the way to the port city of Limón (Till Limon it is about 2 – 3 hours drive) – if you get to Limon during Lunch time or dinner don’t miss “Black’s” restaurant – delicious Caribbean Cuisine in its best! After Limon turn South onto the palm fringed coastal scenic road passing Cahuita and then through the village of Puerto Viejo continuing about a mile south to Azània Bungalows. Total time should be between 3 – 4.5 hours and it depends on who is sitting behind the wheel and of course the traffic.

To get from San Jose to Puerto Viejo by public transportation you can take the direct busses going out of the “Gran Terminal del Caribe” (6:00 am, 10:00 am, 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm) to Puerto Viejo from “Gran Terminal del Caribe” or a private transfer in a minibus service.

  • Playa Negra is where beginners go to surf and where local instructors can be often be found giving lessons.
  • Playa Cocles is a great surfing beach for intermediate surfers.
